How to get your CT salesperson license

The path from student to licensed agent, step by step.

Finish your 60-hour course

Complete a DCP-approved Real Estate Principles and Practices course. You must be at least 18.

Apply to the CT Department of Consumer Protection

Once DCP reviews and approves your application ($80 fee), you get instructions to register and schedule with PSI.

Schedule and take the exam

Book with PSI and pass both parts. You have one year from your eligibility date to pass both.

Find a sponsoring broker

You need a Connecticut broker to sponsor you before you can practice. This choice shapes your first year, so compare your options.

Activate your license

You have two years from your most recently passed portion to activate. You need a supervising CT broker and the $590 license fee.

Already licensed in another state?

Connecticut has reciprocity agreements with 12 states. If you're actively licensed by exam in one of them, you can get a Connecticut salesperson license without taking the 60-hour course or the full CT exam.

Licensed in a state that isn't on the list? You can still apply. You'll need to have passed a licensing exam in your home state, then pass the Connecticut state portion through PSI. New York is no longer reciprocal with Connecticut.

“I got my license in Massachusetts first. It was 40 hours instead of Connecticut's 60, and I could do the course online around my schedule. Once I passed, I transferred my license to Connecticut through reciprocity. Fewer hours, and a lot easier.”

CT exam FAQ

What happens if I fail one part?

You can retake just the portion you didn't pass. Retakes are $51 through PSI, and you can test as many times as you need within one year of your eligibility date. After that, you reapply with DCP.

What should I bring on exam day?

A valid government-issued ID. The exam is closed book, and personal electronic devices, including handheld calculators, aren't allowed in the testing room. Check your PSI confirmation for the full rules.

Do I need a broker before I take the exam?

No. You can test without a sponsoring broker. You need one to activate your license and start working.

How much does the exam cost?

PSI's exam fee is $59 for both portions the first time and $51 for a retake. DCP charges an $80 application fee and a $590 license fee when you activate. Confirm current amounts with PSI and DCP before you apply.
